Communication / Connectivity

The nearest major airport is at Bagdogra, which is 2 to 4 hours drive from Dooars. Bagdogra airport is well connected to Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati with daily flights. It is well connected with roads and railways with the neighboring places. Paro airport in Bhutan is also 8 to 9 hours drive. So is Guwahati airport which is well connected with the rest of India.

New Jalpaiguri railway station is the major junction. Though railway is not popular as a mode of transport in the area, yet there are a few railway station and the track passes through this scenic route. Important stations like Rajabhatkhawa, Malbazar, New Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and Chalsa. A scenic rail route between Alipurduar Junction and New Jalpaiguri via Malbazar covers almost entire Dooars region.

Regular bus services provided by North Bengal State Transport Corporation and Assam State Transport Corporation and other private vehicles also is available. Gorumara is 75 kilometers from Siliguri, Chapramari is 68 kilometers from Siliguri, the Buxa Tiger Reserve is 200 kilometers from Siliguri and the Jaldapara is 124 kilometers from Siliguri.

Places of Interests

One of the most diversified wildlife Sanctuary situated between the co ordinates 26° 40′ 0″ North, 89° 20′ 0″ East. With summer temperature is 20° C to 38° C and winters are mild with 10° C to 24° C. This is one of the most visited sites of Dooars and preferable time to visit is from September end to mid May. This is a bird watcher’s paradise. The rare Bengal Florican can be spotted here along with hornbill, racket - tailed drongo and paradise flycatcher. One can also find the rarest variety of animals and birds including peacocks. The Sanctuary remains closed during May 15th to September 15th. It is one of the oldest sanctuaries, established in 1941. It is similar to the savannah of South America with elephant grasses, interspersed with trees and bamboo. One - horned rhinoceros, an animal threatened with extinction ca be found here in abundance along with leopards, elephants, sambhar, barking deer, spotted deer, hog deer, and herds of wild boars and bison. Elephant safaris is one of the most sort after entertainment and even Jeep safaris are sometime missed by traveler. One can run wild in the various Sanctuaries, National Parks & Tiger Reserves that are on offer in this region. Visit to Toto Para, a small village, which is home to the primitive Toto tribe, who number just a couple of hundreds can be arranged.

It was declared as a National Park in the year 1992. Earlier in the year 1949 it was known as a wildlife sanctuary, river Murti, Jaldhaka and Ingdong drains this park forming a water body known for birding. This national park is famous for the breeding of the rare one - horned rhinoceros. Elephant ride and Jeep safari can help you spot the mighty bison, leopard or spotted deer and peacocks. The other mammals found here are, sambar, hog deer, reptiles, huge wild tuskers, wild boars and the rarest variety of animals and birds. It is a paradise for lovers of nature and adventurer. Nearby there are many a spot to visit. Watchtowers at Chuk chuki, and Jatra Prasad, Toto Para, Jaldapara, Dhupi Jhora, Bindu, Samsing, Rocky Island, Suntaley Khola, Buxar Tiger reserve, Cooch Behar etc are some of the places of Interest. This tiger reserve forest abounds in a fascinating diversity of flora and fauna. The surrounding region is home to the tribes like Mech, Rava, Oraon, Munda, Kora and even the smallest surviving tribe, the Toto. It is one of the reserve forests stretching to Bhutan as Phipsu reserve and to Rasikbill near Cooch Behar and is drained by rivers like Sankosh, Raidak, Jayanti, Churnia, Turturi, Phashkhawa, Dima and Nonani. Elephants and leopard can be spotted very frequently. A small pond, locally known as pokhri on hilltop with innumerable numbers of tortoise is a treat to watch. Declared as National Park in January 1992 and is well maintained with an orchid house and leopard rehabilitation centre. There is a fort called Buxa Fort at an altitude of 850 meters on the Sinchula Range and was used for detainees during freedom movement of India. Buxa has a great collection of rare orchids and plants including medicinal plants. Jayanti is a beautiful spot drained by Jayanti River and hills around. Special attraction is for scenic beauty, wild life and its diversification. Surrounded by the luxuriant forests of Buxa tiger reserve Rajabhatkhawa, is a hamlet with a beautiful small rail station and paradise for nature lover. A journey through this splendid scenery will rejuvenate anyone mentally. There are beautiful tea gardens all around it specially Phaskhowa known for its tea tourism package.

SikiaJhora is a rivulet flowing through the famous Buxa Tiger Reserve surrounded by Damanpur Range. SikiaJhora stream can be found in North Panialguri in Alipurduar subdivision. SikiaJhora is one of the major tourist highlights apart from the tigers inside the Buxa Reserve. Boating is allowed on the brooke and it also a famous bird watching spot. You can stay at Sikiajhora resort to cover the whole Buxa region.

Dooars in the South, Bhutan and Sikkim in the north and Kalimpong in the west is the luxuriant forest of Neora Valley known for birding and its diversity. It is known for its dense forests, bamboo groves, brilliant canopy of rhododendron trees, lush green valley, rivers & streams, gushing and gurgling down the hills meet you at every mile or two and scenic trek route. Its vicinity is home to some of the tourist spots of the region. It is extraordinarily rich in avian-fauna or the feathered animals. Due to its altitudinal variation ranging from 600 feet to 10600 feet and its location, the forest is diversified. It is home to various species of birds like the Pheasants, Orioles, Owls, Partridges, Swifts and Woodpeckers. Red Panda and other important mammals like Gaur, Clouded Leopard, Lesser Cats, Himalayan Thar, Serrow, Gural, Deer and Squirrels can be spotted. Nearby places are Bindu, a hamlet in a valley encircled with hills of Bhutan and India on the banks of river Jaldhaka, Todey, a settlement is one hours drive from Bindu and is situated at an altitude of around 1440 meters with forest cover. Suntalekhola is situated at an altitude of nearly 730 meters in the southern part of Neora Valley National Park and is known for its location and for the scenic trek route through Samsing - Bhote Ghar - Thusum - Rechela - Alubari - Lava is an unforgettable thrilling experience or the other route ends at Pedong from Todey via Tangtey.

It is bounded by the district of Jalpaiguri in the north, Assam in the east and Bangladesh in the south as well as in the west and was the capital of Koch tribes for more than 400 years. It became part of India after India’s independence. This old kingdom attracts tourists for its Palace, Rasikbill and Temples around the place. Madan Mohan is highly revered and an annual fair called Raas Purnima, held as per the lunar calendar and generally held in mid November.
